NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on H.R. 7176, the Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2024. By removing restrictions on the export and import of natural gas, this bill would help U.S. energy producers and American allies who rely on U.S.-produced liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Under current law, exports to U.S. free-trade partners are automatically deemed to be in the public interest. H.R. 7176 would expand this process to encompass other U.S. friends and allies. Deeming the exportation or importation of LNG to be in the public interest would reduce the opportunity for political abuse of dubious “public interest” objections to block LNG trade. In addition, H.R. 7176 would transfer the authority to approve LNG terminals from the Department of Energy to the independent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Roll call votes on H.R. 7176 will be significantly weighted in NTU’s annual Rating of Congress, and a “YES” vote will be considered the pro-taxpayer position.
