As Congress works on a plan to extend the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a new poll commissioned by National Taxpayers Union (NTU) affirms that voters—especially Republicans and swing district constituents—are worried about the impact of rising taxes and strongly support extending the Trump Tax Cuts to provide economic relief and promote growth.
Voters in the survey revealed clear anxiety over the current economic climate:
- 81% say the cost of living has increased over the past year, with most expecting further increases.
- 80% agree that they will struggle to afford basic necessities like groceries and utilities if taxes go up.
The poll, conducted by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates, surveyed 1,575 registered voters in 21 key congressional districts and found 91% of Republicans agree Congress needs to act as quickly as possible to make sure the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts do not expire.
“Americans fresh off tax season are frustrated by the time and money they spent to file and pay their taxes this year and they’re worried about the next blow to their wallets,” Pete Sepp, President of National Taxpayers Union, said. “Allowing the President’s 2017 law to expire would mean a large tax hike on families already battling inflation and high prices. Voters are making it crystal clear: they want to avoid this economic and political disaster by extending the taxpayer relief that has served America so well.”
Tax Cuts Are a Defining Issue for Republicans
The poll confirms a stark political reality for lawmakers: supporting the Trump Tax Cuts is not just popular, it’s a decisive issue for the conservative base. For Republican candidates, backing the tax cuts is a clear electoral advantage: 85% of Trump voters say it makes them more likely to support a candidate.
“With the 2025 tax cliff approaching, the data shows that candidates in swing districts have a clear mandate from voters to act quickly to extend the Trump Tax Cuts,” Sepp said.
Denying Tax Cuts Could Mean a Loss at the Polls for Democrats
Included in the poll were three districts with sitting Democrats where Trump won in 2024. In these battlegrounds, constituents of both parties overwhelmingly supported tax cuts:
- In Representative Vicente Gonzalez’s district (TX-34), 68% of voters agree Congress must extend the Trump Tax Cuts quickly.
- In Representative Don Davis’s district (NC-01), 81% of voters agree Congress must extend the Trump Tax Cuts quickly.
- In Representative Jared Golden’s district (ME-02), 58% of voters agree Congress must extend the Trump Tax Cuts quickly.
